History of Sussex County, New Jersey

The County of Sussex (also known as Sussex County) is the northernmost county in the State of New Jersey. It is part of the New York Metropolitan Area. As of the 2000 Federal decennial census, 144,166 persons resided in Sussex County. Sussex County is the 36th wealthiest county in the United States with its median household income being $65,266.

The county was founded on 8 June 1753 from portions of Morris County.[1] Morris County separated from Hunterdon County which separated from Burlington County. Originally the area of Sussex County was under the legal jurisdiction of Burlington County. Warren County was separated from Sussex County on November 20, 1824. The county seat of Sussex County is the Town of Newton[2]. [Wiki]

The New Jersey GenWeb is composed of Volunteers who are committed to locating local Genealogical and Historical Resources to be provided free of charge to visiting Researchers.

We transcribe, abstract, and format these resources so that they can be put online. If you find that there are errors in the files on the Sussex GenWeb, please contact the County Coordinator.  If the errors are of a Historical nature, every effort will be made to add your comments, we cannot, however, alter original records.
